Meeting with teacher mentor |
We met up with our teacher mentor, Mrs. Lim and updated her on our work progress. |
This is our tenth group meeting of the year. In this meeting, our main idea was to brainstorm for questions for both our interview with the Chao yang school staff and also our survey. We did this in a rather interesting way. Each of us would come up with our questions on a piece of paper and we would pass our paper around for everyone else in the group to edit, give opinions and also cancel the irrelevant questions. Then, each of us would type out our own questions and we would choose the best.
We also met up with our teacher mentor, Mrs. Lim and basically kept her updated on our work progress. We also discussed various issues about our project.
We plan to finalize our survey and interview questions soon and get valuable information from the other members of our community.

Meeting With Teacher Mentor |
We met up with our teacher mentor, Mrs. Lim and basically discussed about our library proposal and also some other aspects of our project |
This is the 9th group meeting for us. In this short 2 hours, Xiao Dong basically split up the workload of the background research into 5 relatively fair and equal sections. Each of us had the responsibility to complete that part of the background research. Soon after, we got started on our various sections.
In this group meeting, we also met up with our teacher mentor, Mrs. Lim the main issue that we discussed was mainly our library proposal. We discussed about how we were going to get our books and also some possible partnerships with other schools, including Anderson Primary, the neighbouring school of Chao Yang School. We believe that we can organize several programs whereby we can get the students of Chao Yang and the students of Anderson to interact. About how we can possibly get the books, after brainstorming, we decided that the ways that we can get the books are as such:
1) Organise fund raising through selling of food items and use the funds to buy cheap books from warehouse sales or bookshops.
2) Organise fund raising through selling handicraft of Chao Yang School students and use the funds to buy cheap books from warehouse sales or bookshops.
3) Get donations of old books from the RI students.
4) Get the books from primary school libraries which they do not want.
We hope that these programs and plans of ours can greatly benefit the students of Chao Yang School.

We also met up with our teacher mentor Mrs. Lim and basically discussed on our plans for the project, particularly on our background research and also on our resource package since we finally received an email from our external mentor Mrs. Kala Rajesh and we finally could get started on our package. We were also told to hand in our personal portfolio next week. For next week we are likely to be making a trip down to the library to get valuable resources for our background.
For now, Xiao Dong will be splitting up the work for our background research and we can get started soon.
That’s it for now. Will further update you on our project.
Bryan
To be very frank and honest, for this session, we were not as productive as usual. But wait a second! We have our reasons! Firstly, we are still waiting for the email reply of our external teacher mentor, Mrs. Kala Rajesh before we get started on the resource package. Secondly, Kai Cheng was not here and we lacked manpower. Thirdly, we could not get a computer as all were booked. But, there were still some things that we managed to accomplish.
We had a group discussion discussing various issues about our project. We also met up with our teacher mentor, Mrs. Lim. We basically discussed various issues, including the idea of a scrapbook, the content of our background research and also about our plans in the upcoming weeks and more. Mrs. Lim had the suggestion that each of us kept an individual scrapbook and inside, we could write our reflections and thoughts, paste our photographs and also put in certain newspaper or other kinds of articles relevant to the topic. We should also decorate the scrapbooks and make it presentable, of course. This scrapbook could be a replacement to our blog as the blog, this blog I am writing on now, is a little too plain, wordy and boring. This was just a suggestion and is still not confirmed yet. So, until further notice, this blog will still be active but may be gone in the near future.
Mrs. Lim also gave us invaluable advice about what we should include in our background research. She said that apart from the content from our interview, we should also read up on articles and real life examples of the lives of the intellectually disabled. We could include their achievements, their careers, how the society treat them differently, how the society look down on them and even how some people make use of them and cheat them. There are also a lot more that we can read up on and include in our background research, or if not our portfolios.
So that is all for now. Will make sure to keep you guys updated on our progress in this project in the upcoming weeks.

| 2 | Research on intellectual disability | We started did some basic research on intellectual disability. |
| 3 | Updating and editing of blog | We edited our blog and made some minor improvements |
Hi all. This is our sixth group meeting of the year. This time, we were a little shorthanded as Kai Cheng was sick and Sean was meeting a teacher for quite some time. In this meeting, we basically started on our literature review. We started discussing about the topics that we should do and also how we plan to go about doing it.
We came up with certain parts that we would like to include in our literature review. However, for most of the parts, we had to get information through interviews with the staff of Chao Yang School and the parents of the students. The only parts that we could research on using the web were the government relationship with the intellectually challenged and about the intellectual disability itself. Hence we got started on intellectual disability – its causes, effects, the different kinds of disability and more. Besides that, we also made some minor changes to our blog to improve it. It was quite a pity later as our computer suddenly ran out of battery as some of our work was lost. That was all we did for this session.

| 1 | Research on Singapore Government | Using the internet, we researched on the Singapore government and compiled relevant information that we were going include in our resource package. |
| 2 | Research on Singapore Identity | We also we researched on Singapore identity and compiled relevant information that we were going include in our resource package. |
| 3 | Brainstorming for ideas to make lessons more engaging | We discussed and brainstormed for various ideas and concepts that could possibly make the lesson more engaging and interesting for the students. |
Our group decided to meet up during the June holidays to get started on the resource package. We choose to meet up at Sean’s house on Sunday as many were not free on the other days due to various commitments such as camps, job week and music examinations.
In this meeting we started on our research on the topics that we will be including in the resource package. We started research on the Singapore Government and Singapore Identity so far. We compiled relevant information that we possibly would include in our resource package. However, it was not easy doing so as most of the information on the web was possibly too complicated for the children to comprehend and understand, especially about the Singapore Government, as we too weren’t too familiar about certain things as well.
We also discussed and brainstormed for various ideas and concepts that could possibly make the lesson more engaging and interesting for the students. This planning would help us in our future construction of the resource package.
Overall, this meeting was very meaningful to us as we not only managed to get started on the resource package, but we also had the opportunity to bond together working together as a group. Bryan.
Basically I felt that this was a very fruitful and meaningful trip for myself, as this was not only the first time that we met up with our teacher mentor, but was also the first time that we had an opportunity to interact with the students and observe lessons in progress. Interacting with the students, I could tell that most of them were very happy to see us. Even though they may have problems expressing their views clearly, I knew for sure that they are very enthusiastic and fun loving children. They really love to play games, including a board game about dinosaurs which we played together with them. There was this one particular boy who kept waving to me and Kai Cheng throughout our time spent observing the lesson. With this lesson observation, I am now really inspired to be able to help them and to make a difference in their lives with not only the resource package, but also the library.
